When our normal is disrupted

When things go according to their normal usual rhythm we live in a nearly unconscious way. We do things automatically, without thinking why or what makes us do these things.

We get up in the morning and habitually perform our usual tasks, like brushing our teeth, taking showers, preparing our usual breakfast, and stepping outside.  Very rarely we have an opportunity to stop and re-evaluate our customary actions. We are so used to our daily routines that we automatically follow our set patterns of actions, thoughts and habits.

It is only when something unexpected happens, something that interrupts our groove, that we stop and become aware. We literally wake up and are forced to examine our lives. We spend time assessing our behavior and might even try to adjust it. Oftentimes these unexpected events are not positive, usually they are some sort of crises that shatter our world and shake up our routines. I would never wish for anyone to get a re-evaluation opportunity this way.

However, during March-April time of 2020 the compulsory quarantine is forcing us to change our usual ways.  Lockdowns and quarantines are happening to nearly 40% of the population of the world. We are being pushed into unplanned intensive solitary retreats, or social isolations.  We are given a chance to re-examine our conditioned actions, beliefs and emotional patterns.

If we cannot go outside, we spend more time with our families or in solitude. We are faced with feelings of emotional intensity and vulnerability.  Have you learnt anything about yourself so far? Were you brave to look into the depth of your fears, doubts and unresolved traumas.

These reflections may be challenging, unsettling and disappointing, but being aware of them is a huge step forward.  Awareness means a lot, because without it nothing can begin, it is a first, mandatory step towards betterment of your life.

You are on a way to improving yourself and the quality of your life. You just need a bit of an effort to correct your behavior, but the big step, the awareness of this need is already in place!

This quarantine time when we are limited to our homes and grocery stores may allow us to slow down [after all there is nowhere to rush to] and be more conscious about what we do, how we do it and why we do it.

It can also give us ample time to correct the unwanted habits and create new, empowering ones.

We probably still have another month of social isolation ahead of us and while being on social media is fun and gives us a chance to connect, being with yourself to re-examine your emotions, thoughts and assumptions could be beneficial.

Use this time wisely, it will be so satisfying to realize that you have worked on yourself and improved a few important aspects of your relationships, health or intelligence at the time when the whole world slowed down and watched TV shows.

Take a day to evaluate and decide what new habits you would love to create for yourself.  What new action, if applied daily, could be impactful in a positive way. What exactly [should you start doing it in a consistent way] could significantly improve your quality of life.

Chances are you already know what it is.

Become aware and ACT on IT!
